OK Percussion Duo consists of two musicians from Brno, one focusing on contemporary music, the other on jazz. Together they try to present their original repertoire and create their own compositions. In agreement with the JFO management, they prepared a program of contemporary composers. The Slovak violinist Milan Paľa was invited to the production.
Drums in a solo role are not very frequent in the program. That is why such art production clearly belongs to the JFO repertoire.
Who do we meet then? Erkki-Sven Tüür is one of today’s most prominent composers. His songs from the 1990s were once said to be sound dramas expanding in a space that is constantly shifting, expanding, and contracting. Conversio, which is one of his most famous compositions, can be considered a drama.
Andy Pape’s music finds inspiration in several sources – avant-garde, musical theatre, jazz and rock. Marrrrimba Rrrrock was created in the 1990s and emphasizes marimba as a percussion rather than a melodic instrument.
Edvard Schiffauer is one of the most important composers in Ostrava. He wrote the following: “Seconds – four feelings for two percussion players with an uncertain pitch (input, dance, time measuring, and final feeling -“ it is not so bad ”).
Miloslav Ištvan was a co-founder of the Brno Compositional School and composed for percussion quite often. At first, he used them in an orchestral cast, later included them in chamber works and finally used them solo. “Percussion instruments have their own charm and a certain amount of listening wear. That’s why Capriccio was written in this and not another cast, ”the author said.
Argentine composer Mauricio Kagel used percussion instruments, even the lesser-known, as often. He has always described very precisely what a particular tool should look like, where it comes from and where to find it. In his compositions, he even prescribes the actors’ events. The cycle of songs Rrrrrrr… was created over several years and gradually reached as many as 41 autonomous parts, each of them starting with the letter R.
The Parable of a Sculptor is a work of OK Percussion Duo. The authors of this case were inspired by the text from the book by Citadel Antoin de Saint-Exupéry.
Luboš Fišer is actually one of the most famous Czech composers of the 20th century. He is the author of music for many films and fairy tales (eg Arabela). Crux for solo violins, timpani and bells will bring listeners to a completely different world, present the terror, humiliation and emptiness, a direct protest against the progressing normalization.
