International Orchestral Academy
Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra announces audition for International Orchestral Academy.
Janáček Philharmonic, based in Ostrava is one of the leading symphonic orchestras of the Czech Republic. Long orchestral tradition, typical bohemian sound, and progressive repertoire are very much praised both by a local audience and international reviewers. Excellence in performing not only Janáček but most of the late-romantic to the contemporary repertoire is one of the orchestra‘s strengths.
In 2023-24 the orchestra hosts guest conductors such as the chief conductor Vassily Sinaisky, Andrey Boreyko, Alpesh Chauhan, Tomáš Netopil, Ivan Volkov, Robert Jindra, Václav Luks, and soloists such as Vadim Gluzman, Lukáš Vondráček, Johannes Moser, Federico Colli and Boris Giltburg.
The International Orchestral Academy (IOA) is suitable especially for students and graduates of music performance programmes at the university level. The internship is unpaid is hence highly suitable for Erasmus+ recipients.
Trainees will gain hands-on orchestral experience in one of the leading Czech orchestras, taking part in most of the orchestra performances (subscription concerts, touring projects both locally and internationally). Members of IOA are also strongly encouraged to perform a chamber concert together. Trainees shall receive mentoring by the principal players of the orchestra as well as by the members of a string quartet for chamber music practice.

Who is the International Orchestral Academy designed for:
The International Orchestral Academy (IOA) is a one-semestral or bi-semestral training programme for students and recent graduates of higher education music schools from all over the world. Within its framework, trainees become members of the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava and take a part in most of the orchestra performances – subscription concerts, touring projects both locally and internationally, recordings. Under the auspices of JPO principal players, academy members get to play a broad orchestral repertoire with the best Czech and international conductors and soloists. Academy members will also have an opportunity to perform a chamber concert together.
The minimum enrollment period is five months (half-season during either August – January or February-June), maximum Academy membership covers one full season (August – June).
The position is unpaid. Trainees shall be fully funded by their home University/Academy through the Erasmus+ programme (or similar programmes) designed for students´ mobility and professional practice. There is no financial reward whatsoever from the orchestra towards the Academy members. Travel costs to/from Ostrava, living expenses, such as board and lodging, insurance, concert dress, etc. are to be fully covered by the Academy member. Usual Erasmus+ monthly support is fine to cover all of that considering the Czech Republic life standard.
