The concert will open with a new work commissioned by the JPO from composer Darja Kukal Moiseeva, followed by two violin concertos performed by young and talented Czech violinists.
Matteo Hager will appear both as composer and performer. A winner of numerous prestigious awards in both Czech and international competitions, Hager has already appeared as a soloist with several leading Czech conductors and orchestras. As a composer, he made an impression at the Dvořák Prague Festival in 2022 with the premiere of his Threnody for Violin and Orchestra, dedicated to the victims of the war in Ukraine. In Ostrava, he will now present his own Concerto for Violin and Orchestra.
Seventeen-year-old Czech violinist Richard Kollert, also an exceptional talent, has been achieving success since early childhood. He is a laureate of numerous international competitions and has performed on stages both in the Czech Republic and abroad. He will perform Jean Sibelius’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. Sibelius, who abandoned his dream of becoming a violin virtuoso at the age of twenty-five, poured his hard-won experience as a student into this concerto, composed between 1902 and 1904. The piece combines dazzling technical brilliance with the pure, unaffected musical spirit of a born symphonist. It was a success from its very first performance and remains one of the most beloved violin concertos in the world today.
