French composer of Swiss origin Arthur Honegger wrote his latest vocal-instrumental work, the Christmas Cantata for Baritone, Children’s Choir, Organ and Orchestra, two years before his death. The premiere in 1953 brought a work permeated by the comfort, calm and hope of Christ’s birth. The audience is also addressed by responses of lovely folk carols and Baroque polyphony.

“A solemn mass dedicated to the celebration of the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, in Czech in music, introduced by Jakub Jan Ryba, teacher and director of the Rožmitál choir in 1796 at 31 years of age.” literally synonymous with Czech Christmas. We know it under the shorter name Czech Christmas Mass, or as a one-word Rybovka (*abbreviation of the author’s name). Ryba himself appreciated other opuses more. The song, simplicity and natural thinness of this piece, however, created a prototype of Czech Christmas. “What is it that is a nice play?” They ask in one aria of Ryba’s character. Even after more than two centuries, every listener knows the answer.
