A musical journey through the centuries begins with Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. Following Benjamin Britten’s melancholic Serenade, performed by Petr Nekoranec and Kateřina Javůrková, the evening will culminate in Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony. Its final movement, inspired by the flight of a flock of swans, delivers powerful emotion and a hymn-like conclusion.

Renaissance England, the age of Shakespeare, has inspired generations of British artists. Ralph Vaughan Williams, the foremost British symphonist of the early 20th century, drew inspiration from English Renaissance music. The motet by Thomas Tallis inspired him in 1910 to compose the charming Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis for string orchestra.

In his Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, Benjamin Britten set to music poems by English authors spanning five centuries, capturing the magical atmosphere of night. Inspired by the form of the baroque and classical serenade, Britten created a highly personal work, a musical dialogue between the tenor and the horn. The demanding solo parts will be performed by Kateřina Javůrková, principal horn of the Czech Philharmonic, and Petr Nekoranec, one of the most sought-after tenors of the young generation.

Jean Sibelius called his later symphonies his “confessions of faith.” During the difficult years of the First World War, as Finland struggled against Russia and Sibelius was forced to flee, faith remained his support. His monumental Fifth Symphony culminates in a triumphant song inspired by the sight of a flock of swans in flight.
